چکیده

A study of nanomechanical cantilevers vibrating at various resonating modes in liquid is presented. Resonant frequency spectrum with 16 well resolved flexural modes is obtained. The quality factor increased from 1 at mode 1 to 30 at mode 16. The theoretical estimate of eigenfrequency using the Elmer–Dreier model F.-J. Elmer and M. Dreier, J. Appl. Phys. 81, 12 1997 and Sader’s extended viscous model C. A. Van Eysden and J. E. Sader, J. Appl. Phys. 101, 044908 2007 matched well with the experimental data. The apparent mass of the liquid comoved by the oscillating cantilevers decreased asymptotically with mode number. © 2008 American Institute of Physics. DOI: 10.1063/1.2838295

A MEMS Resonant Sensor to Measure Fluid Density and Viscosity under Flexural and Torsional Vibrating Modes

Methods to calculate fluid density and viscosity using a micro-cantilever and based on the resonance principle were put forward. Their measuring mechanisms were analyzed and the theoretical equations to calculate the density and viscosity were deduced. The fluid-solid coupling simulations were completed for the micro-cantilevers with different shapes. The sensing chips with micro-cantilevers we...

A Novel Micromachined Liquid Property Sensor Utilizing a Doubly Clamped Vibrating Beam

A novel miniaturized sensor for the online measurement of the mechanical properties of a viscous liquid utilizing a resonating beam has been designed and fabricated in silicon technology. The modeling of the electromagnetic actuation of the device is discussed and the response of a first prototype was experimentally characterized using impedance spectroscopy.

Unconventional uses of microcantilevers as chemical sensors in gas and liquid media

The use of microcantilevers as (bio)chemical sensors usually involves the application of a chemically sensitive layer. The coated device operates either in a static bending regime or in a dynamic flexural mode. While some of these coated devices may be operated successfully in both the static and dynamic modes, others may suffer from certain shortcomings depending on the type of coating, the me...

Higher modes of vibration increase mass sensitivity in nanomechanical microcantilevers

We evaluated the potential and limitations of resonating nanomechanical microcantilevers for the detection of mass adsorption. As a test system we used mass addition of gold layers of varying thickness. Our main findings are: (1) A linear increase in mass sensitivity with the square of the mode number—a sensitivity increase of two orders of magnitude is obtained from mode 1 to mode 7 with a min...
